Art Director: Willy Fleckhaus.
Fleckhaus was one of the most innovative and influential postwar graphic artists in the German-speaking countries. Together with Adolf Theobald and Stephan Wolf, Willy Fleckhaus co-founded "Twen" magazine in 1959 and became its art director.
In 1980 he was asked to art direct a magazine for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Through his innovative design principles, FAZ Magazine achieved the reputation of being the most beautiful and widely read publication in the world! Fleckhaus was Professor at the University in Essen and Wuppertal and taught and nurtured only the best and most promising students.
Bauhaus influences, coupled with the inspirational teachings of Alexey Brodovitch and close friend Max Bill, gave students a working education they couldn’t get anywhere else.
This copy is No 3. So, the very start of Fleckhaus art directing this magazine, which was a weekly supplement to the FAZ newspaper. Sadly, Fleckhaus suddenly died in 1983 from a heart attack, while on holiday at his favourite house in Italy.
Hans-Georg Pospischil, a pupil of Fleckhaus, took over the art direction of the FAZ Magazin.
